Long ago there was a location on Park Street on the Nort side (spelled correctly for pronunciation purposes) that was always a fav of mine. Still the best of the "wurst", "brats", and "dogs" in CNY at the Ainsley Drive location off Brighton Avenue. Service is great and the food is very good. Be sure to try the English Chips and enjoy the old fashioned decor.

For the past several weeks I have taken a long break from writing reviews on Yelp because I wanted to ensure that the restaurant featured as my 100th review was completely worthy of that honor. Danzer's is, quite literally, the most deserving restaurant I have ever been to. I have been coming to Danzer's for almost 30 years, and yes, although they have had some issues over the years (including the most recent issue with servers walking-out claiming 'hostile workplace' and 'bug infestation'), they still serve the best German-American food I have ever had in an authentic atmosphere for fair prices. Food: I have had everything from their fried haddock, to their chicken wings, to their Bavarian Sampler, to the Reuben, and beyond. Regardless of what you order, you are guaranteed some excellent food. Danzer's still makes the very best Reuben you will ever have. It is not your traditional Reuben though. It is messy, and loaded with meat, cheese, sauerkraut, and house dressing. In fact, you may be better served using a fork and knife rather than picking this beast up. The bottom line though? Get the Red Reuben and enjoy an incredibly well-balanced sandwich that hits on all the major palette notes (sweet, salty, and savory). In addition to the Reuben, they have some of the best wings (BBQ-like sauce) and (yes) French Fries. Don't ask me how they are more delicious at Danzer's than anywhere else, but they are. They are always piping-hot, crispy on the outside, yet tender on the inside. A couple of other dishes that deserve notable mention: The Hamlet is just awesome, and even their traditional roast beef deli sandwich on their amazing and fresh pumpernickel bread is perfect. It is a mound of fresh deli meat on a soft and flavorful pumpernickel bread. When I attended Syracuse University, I would regularly come here at lunch time for a half-sandwich and salad. Lastly, how can one not absolutely love the Apple Fritters! But be sure to notify your server early that you want them! Sometimes, they are even sold out -- that is how good they are. Food: 5 / 5 Service: I typically receive better-than-average service here; but it is nothing fabulous. I don't think I have ever had the same server more than once, which would lead me to believe that there is fairly high turn-over here. Regardless though, I have never had 'bad service' here. Service: 4 / 5 Atmosphere: I have always found the atmosphere to be charming, authentic, and unique. I have never had an experience that would suggest uncleanliness. Honestly, the restrooms do typically border on 'questionable'; but I partially attribute this to a much needed renovation, and less about lack of care. The lighting in the main dining areas can be a little dim during night time hours. Admittedly, the whole restaurant could use some sprucing-up; but that doesn't detract from the great bones the restaurant has. I have always felt at-home in Danzer's, as they offer a warm and comfortable place to eat great food. Atmosphere: 4 / 5 Price: I have always gotten quality food for a more-than-fair price. In my opinion, the food at Danzer's is one of the best values in Syracuse -- especially when taking into consideration the excellent food offerings. Price: 5 / 5 Final Thoughts: Danzer's is near-and-dear to my heart as I have had a lot of great memories in there, and continue to have them when I return home for vacation. Danzer's is always on the definitely-must-visit list when we visit home. As I briefly alluded to above though, Danzer's has undoubtedly gone through some rough-patches in terms of service, and atmosphere. Despite that though, they have always delivered a quality dining experience with the best German-American food I have ever had. Nothing I have ever eaten even remotely compares to the Big Red Reuben. Get it!

I have been to Danzer's twice now (the first time over 5 years ago), so I will base this review on my latest trip. I was feeling very German when I ordered the Danzerburger and a house salad (yes, lame) but the others in my group were feeling more into the mood and ordered Chicken Schnitzel and the Jager Schnitzel. so we are covered. Danzer's has a great feel to it, lots of German themed flags, stained glass, and trinkets/steins/statues that make you feel you are in the heart of Deutschland. Starter soups were fantastic. We tried the French Onion and the Split Pea (special). Soups were tasty and not over seasoned. The house salad dressing was great - a horseradish parmesan vinaigrette I believe. My own salad was generously sized for a starter and had plenty of bleu cheese crumbles as requested. After what seemed to take a little longer than expected, we received our entrees. I sampled the chicken schnitzel, the homemade rice, and the warm german potato salad. I loved the potato salad. Highly recommend this when ordering. The chicken schnitzel did not blow me away - it was just a thin piece of chicken lightly breaded. I did not try the jager schnitzel, but was told that it was excellent and tasted similarly to when my dining mate had it in Germany. Bonus. We skipped dessert after finding out a least some of them were not homemade, which was disappointing. Our server was very friendly, although we found the pace of the meal to be a bit slower than expected. A popular spot for pre and post game Syracuse games, Danzer's has an awesome beer selection with a full range of Spaten drafts as well as some domestics. I hightly recommend the dark weiss beer - excellent.

Big red reuben is really good, and with the huge bread, its definitely double the size of the next-biggest reuben I've ever seen. Good deal for $9.95. Love the atmosphere, good service, too. Entrees were from 14-17 bucks. I'd skip the onion rings next time, as there's really no need to order any more food than just the sandwich.

The Reuben and Hamlet here are the things to get. These sandwiches are outstanding and totally make up for the dingy location and dark interior. The place has a nice, blue collar, Syracuse feel. It is dark and dated, much like Syracuse, but it has outstanding food. I would best describe it as a "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" type location. Go there and try a Hamlet or Reuben. You'll thank me later.

It amazes me how much people malign the culture and cuisine of Syracuse. I can't tell you how many times I've had people tell me, uhhg, Ruby Tuesdays is the only thing to eat in Syracuse. Only to show them ten exotic, authentic, and most importantly, tasty restaurants they've never heard of. Danzer's should be on any foodies to do list of Syracuse. Quality stick to your ribs German meals, Brats, porkchops and sauerkraut. Don't forget the beer. German food isn't the most refined food you'll find, you certainly won't see any restaurant bragging about their chef, but it is a high quality break from the norm. A must see if have fond memories of that trip to the Hofbrau Haus. The location is certainly sketchy, between a heavy equipment sales company and a highway, but its the sort of thing you'll only get in an old school immigrant town like the Cuse.
